By offering a wide range of braces types to our patients in Parker and Castle Rock, CO, Dr. Ted Struhs and his team offer multiple solutions for each patient so that you can find the treatment that best suits you.
Common Types of Braces
Not all braces are created equal. While certain types of orthodontic issues may require metal braces over more modern options like clear aligners, a lot of the time it’s up to patients to decide on the kind of braces they want to get.
We want to empower our patients to make informed decisions, so we’re here to give you some information about the three most common types of braces: metal braces, ceramic braces, and clear aligners.
Metal Braces
Metal braces are the most commonly worn braces. Metal braces use metal brackets and wires, made from high-grade stainless steel, and bands to straighten your teeth. These bands can be changed out into whatever fun colors you want them to have! Thanks to modern advances in orthodontic technology, metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than they used to be.
Compared to the other types of braces, metal braces are visually the most obvious. The main downside to them is that, out of all the different types of braces, metal braces tend to be a bit more uncomfortable than other options.
Ceramic (Clear) Braces
Ceramic braces are just like metal braces except they’re made out of a clear material instead of stainless steel. While you can still see the metal wire connecting the braces, the piece attached to each tooth is clear.
Ceramic braces are a great option because they offer a more discreet way to straighten your teeth. Plus, some of our patients claim that they’re more comfortable than metal braces.
The main downside to ceramic braces is they the clear elastic ties could become slightly discolored between appointments. You can try to mitigate this by steering clear of common teeth-staining food and drink such as coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries, and tobacco products.
Clear Aligners
Clear aligners include products like SureSmile and Invisalign®, which utilize a series of customized plastic trays to gently move your teeth over time. To produce your set of clear aligners, we use advanced orthodontic technology to model exactly how your teeth need to shift over time for the best possible results.
Clear aligners are easily the most popular braces alternative with adults, as it provides an almost completely invisible way to achieve the straight smile you’ve always dreamed of!
Also, let’s face it — teenagers aren’t too fond of metal braces, either. Our orthodontic offices also provide Invisalign Teen® for young adults who want a more aesthetically pleasing way to straighten their teeth.
